About Us.

Birchfield Nursery started on a green field site in 1987. In the Autumn of that year the hurricane destroyed practically everything we had built and we had to start over. Not the most auspicious start for a new venture you might think but in many ways the hurricane helped establish the business. As a new venture we were able to build up growing areas rapidly without having too much debris to clear up before resuming operations.

At the time it certainly did not feel like that! However we carried on and were invited to grow Hardy Nursery Stock for some Nurseries who had either suffered much worse damage than we had or indeed had taking stock of their organisation and were prepared to 'cast off' certain growing commitments to our new venture. From that 'deluge' of acorns Birchfield grew and grew!

Over the years we have seen the nature of commercial horticulture change with ever more centralisation, mechanisation and highly professional marketing organisations all playing their part in transforming the business landscape. We have played a very small part in those changes and also tried to retain the more traditional 'hands on' aspects of horticulture as well.

We grow a wide range of Hardy Nursery Stock and ferns augmented by Trees, Herbaceous plants, fruit and herbs from local growers. New ventures include the growing of Canna Lilies and no doubt there will be increasing change in the future now that our web site is operational.
